I Have To Do WHAT?!

Last week I went to the doctor for several reasons...1.) because I have been feeling very dehydrated 2.) I have been feeling very tired and fatigued AND 3.) I have had at least 3-4 headaches a week! All of these symptoms have had me feeling pretty blue the last month or so. I would much rather lay around all day then do anything!

So first things first, the nurse weighed me in, took my temp and blood pressure...all this looked good so they sent the doctor in. Dr. Latoni asked me several questions about my diet and daily routine and then did a few tests to check my circulation and reflexes...these all seemed normal to him. After talking a little further, Dr. Latoni decided to do blood work. He tested my Thyroid, Vitamin B12 level and my Hemoglobin level ( to see if I was diabetic). The next day I got my results back and my thyroid was normal and I was not diabetic BUT I had a B12 deficiency. Since I had a B12 deficiency I was told I need to make another appointment to see Dr. Latoni as soon as possible.

Today I went back to the doctor and we reviewed all of my blood work results including my B12 levels. During a B12 blood test your results should come back between 500-1100 pg/mL to read normal...mine came back at 228!!! Dr. Latoni said that a few of the main symptoms of a B12 deficiency is lack of energy, tingling/numbing sensation in hands & feet and headaches. I had everyone of these symptoms! My toes will tingle and go numb when I walk for a long distance in tennis shoes...I always thought this was because maybe my shoes were too narrow or too tight, NOPE! I was completely confused as to how my B12 level could be so low...I mean I eat meat with almost every meal and that is where you get the main source of B12!

So what do you do if you have a B12 deficiency? You have to receive B12 injections! Today I received my first one from a nurse but for the next 8 weeks I will have to give them to myself. After 8 weeks I have to see my doctor again and get my blood work re-done to test these levels. My doctor said that if it is still showing a low count then I be tested for pernicious anemia. If you have pernicious anemia your body is unable to absorb a sufficient amount of vitamin B12 from dietary food sources and therefore require injections of B12 to aid absorption. A lack of B12 can also lead to failures in your nervous system.

So, today was injection one and I still have 8 weeks to go! Dr. Latoni said if this works, by shot 3 I will feel a huge difference in my energy level! Hallelujah! I am ready to have my energy back and just in time for the Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk!
